During my Christmas break I spent a week at a sculpture symposium creating the above sculpture from a block of Oamaru Stone 400 x 400 x 700mm. This was terrifically satisfying and whilst chipping away I was able to ponder some of the elements of creativity.

It was interesting to observe how the 25 or so artists attending used their creativity and how it related to their view of the world. There seemed two strong similarities between the way the stone sculptors used their creativity and how my clients and business associates also do:

1. Some people appear far more comfortable when starting from something that already exists IE sculptors starting with- human models, animals, flowers, and business people a competitors product. Whilst others seem to be able to see something in their imagination as clear to them as though it already exists in front of their eyes.

2. All people appear to be creative but this can manifest as both a positive or a negative, relative to their inner belief and confidence. In stone sculpture, as in business, embracing and managing risk in a positive way is foundational to rising above mediocrity and achieving your best work.

Improve your profit by working smarter
  •  Any business that engages me as a coach naturally expects a return on their investment. (ROI) All engagements based on the expectation that I would deliver benefits, in excess of my fee. I invariably start with an evaluation of where the quickest impact can be made whilst looking for sustainable growth and longer term improvements and increased profit strategies.
  • It is really important to get someone outside your business to look at help you see another view, you will be amazed at what opportunities will present themselves.
  • You can save substantial money in your business just by changing to LED lights – which last 25 times longer than a normal light bulb. This calculator is a UK example but the principle is the same due to the life expectancy of an LED bulb and its efficiency in converting electricity to light, as opposed to incandescent bulbs which waste up to 95% electricity consumption they burn as heat.

Getting new products to the international market

Through our short history New Zealanders have always managed to punch way above their weight, having made many world changing scientific breakthroughs and inventions. What we haven’t always done so well though is to retain and leverage our intellectual property (IP) after we have created something exceptional. While this is a challenge, there is help available and in many cases government funding also exists. I am currently seeking registration as a service provider for NZTE regional business partners network and planning to attend several of International Food Shows this year. This will mean opportunities for my clients to be able to qualify for some financial subsidies. I am always keen to talk to new businesses about their potential export products and requirements but even more so with these trips in mind.

My guess is you haven’t seen a hover wing and certainly didn’t know that it was invented by a New Zealander. Like this piece of ingenius, creative engineering we have many new food products being developed by innovative NZ food companies.

I know because some of them are being developed by my clients.
