How to improve your teams skills: list what you need to improve

Create a training list of everything your people need to be proficient in

This might be part of an induction process that you may have let lapse or it maybe new. Either way, make a list and vary it for front and back of the house:

Place a list on each person’s personal file and ask them to date and sign it when they have undertaken the necessary training. This could be their own shared file in Google docs or a shared page in your staff management software

Ask them to self manage that list with regular reminders and confirm when complete. This is a great time to get this done.

Set up your training tools and processes in a single place that everyone can manage, there are excellent tools available for this that are reasonable.

Look up the NZ Government website for some basic resources that are available free to get you started.

Managing your cash flow

A Cash flow forecast is critical for you to plan your path to recovery. It is vital you work out how long you can last and what you need to do to extend that time. If you need to talk to the bank or anyone else it is likely the first thing they will want to see is a cash flow forecast. If you are using Xero you can get a Statement of Cash flow as a report and there are tools and add ons that allow you to create a cash flow.

For those that aren’t too sure exactly why they are doing this, a cash flow is a schedule of all cash coming into and out of the business. Essentially allowing you to see at what point you will need more cash to stay afloat. Some of you may already have out standing balances to suppliers and creditors and a bunch of other regular commitments which need to be entered, you would also account for the govt pay subsidy. For those businesses that are closed it will be urgent to do this now if you haven’t already done it.

This will allow you to get help and to be able to quickly share your current situation.

There are other cash flow templates online, but the best thing you can do is keep it simple, minimise or eliminate any cost you can and if you need to talk to someone get help now. Regarding understanding cash flow your accountant is likely the best place to start. Don’t hesitate to email me if you need help, but really where I can best help is after you have done this part and need help with restructuring, operational change and marketing. Stay well and calm, your physical and mental health is your greatest asset. Regards Mark

How are you feeling about going into Alert Level 3 at the moment? Excited about being able to trade again? Disheartened that your hospitality business won’t be able to breakeven during this time? Stressed about the changes you need to make in your business?

Everyone has different feelings about this related to their individual situations but if you’re struggling to see how this can get better, I want you to hear me when I tell you that it can and it does. It’s important in a time like this to view this time as an opportunity to think differently about how you do business. Businesses that are able to pivot, innovate and respond with what the new market needs will be the ones that survive, and some will even thrive in this new reality.

I was recently interviewed by Andre Rowell from M2 as part of their virtual summit about my thoughts on the hospitality industry at present. Original video linked here: “Advice for Getting Through Multiple Downturns From Someone Who Has”.
