The value of a better idea

Quill-InkThere is a serious cost to implementing an out of date solution.

For example a café that reinstalls an old cash register instead of a new point of sale system,  because they think there is no cost and less new learning. Yet a new point of sale  system would bring so many new benefits like integrated eftpos and Xero, the  ability to send customers a text message, build a data base and produce  frequency, volume and sales mix reports.

These extras all add incredible value by  allowing the owner to make better decisions, improve the customer experience,  reduce time but also improve management processes, information and  accounting. The cost to change a system after 6 months or a year includes  deconstructing the existing systems, the staff training times two, the loss of  business growth and the delay in building your database. My point here is that  there is a lot of hidden cost in implementing out of date answers.

Start to view new ideas properly and realize the fear and distrust of adopting  new ideas and technology is probably holding you back.

How good is your answer?

I have just been to see the amazing new Len Lye Art Gallery in New Plymouth, I thought it was an exceptional draw card for tourists and something everyone would be proud of. I was really surprised to find some local residents totally against it and scathing about the $100,000 that the New Plymouth Council will contribute to allow the Len Lye Trust to be able to offer free entry for the first year.

The building is spectacular and totally in sync with Len Lye’s artistic vision and his philosophy on art, movement and a kinetic aesthetic. Ironically it will be iconic in New Zealand and around the world, if it isn’t already. Yet some really good people living in Taranaki just can’t move on to a new mindset that includes this wonderful new asset and all the wonderful things it will bring the beautiful region.

Now is the centre of everything

You could be forgiven for thinking that this means only “now matters“ and don’t worry about the future.

What it really means is “now” is both this second in time and the influence of everything that follows.

Whilst everything in life need not be even remotely consequential it is a word that can give you a good insight to how your actions “now” can project forward into the future. This could be portrayed as the ripples emitted from throwing a stone into a calm lake where the ripples are present long after the stone has passed through the surface.

The Value of what a Child thinks

achildsperspective

Our experience can get in the way of being able to see the world around us fresh, with out cynicism.

I  have a nine year old daughter and it is amazing to sometimes see things through her naive eyes. Next time you need a fresh perspective spend an hour talking to a half dozen children of different ages. Ask them questions on how they would solve a problem, discuss how they think things fit together, ask them to prioritise the value or importance of a list of things.

Let yourself accept the answers as they will almost certainly give you a new insight to a fresh and less complicated perspective. The purpose is to help you think differently rather than for either of you to have the right answer.

How well do you communicate achievement???

emotional-understanding-480x270Many work places and organisations have improved their results by communicating and visually depicting what is being collectively achieved.

How does this work?

Well, when people are working on a single part of a project they can be deprived of the, bigger picture result and miss the importance of their part in achieving that result. This leads to a lack of satisfaction and a sense of diminished value, which can lead to a drop in quality, focus, and satisfaction.

Look for opportunities to do better, you will remunerate well for your effort.
