Some relatively easy personal growth

planecloudsMaybe its evolution or maybe it’s from society distortion but our sensory intake appears to be dominated by our ability to see. Recently when flying into Wellington we had to fly through a layer of thick cloud, which separated the clear sky above 5,000m and the relatively clear sky down below 1,000m?

In that moment I realised how much my sense of reality was effected by what I could see but equally what I imaged (what I couldn’t see). Initially I imagined the clouds as solid objects that would damage the plane.

How many of us lazily only use a fraction of our available assets?
I could easily develop some easy personal growth by making better use of my other senses: smell, hearing, touch and taste.

What are some of your under utilised assets that would help you to think differently?

Test your Thinking from at least 3 Alternative Angles

You want to make some changes to your business, so you work out an action plan. Test your plan with the following questions:

  • How will this affect my customers and the end users of my product or service?
  • What other stakeholders will be affected?
  • How is the long-term affect different from the short-term affect?
  • Is this consistent with our vision and values?

Value the Unseen Work

Businesswoman on phone at desk piled high with messy files

Trust is a significant part of being able to accept the work a mechanic has done on your car. It is a lot easier to believe the hours being charged on the invoice when it is a very clear and proscribed process and even better where you have some comprehension of what the job entails.

But it becomes a lot harder when there are uncertainties and elements that change,  and even harder again when there is a need for creativity and a need to adapt as the job goes.  These jobs require a shared desire, trust and a shared set of values with a win/win ethos and commitment to work through any difficulties by the customer and the service provider.

Cynicism and litigation are the enemy.

Thinking differently to see the future

Screen Shot 2015-08-13 at 8.57.10 pmSomething that is happening looks different from some thing that hasn’t happened yet and different again to something that has already happened.

To practice thinking differently look at your every day life and see past your pre-programmed filters.

Best understood with the following analogy; if I ask you to draw a pear, if you are like most people you will draw the profile of a pear! If you drew a round circle with a dot in the middle as though you were looking down on the pear from above it is unlikely it would be recognized or accepted by the majority as a true representation of a pear?

Practice seeing more than just the obvious.
