Learning from the Cricket – Impatiently Patient or Patiently Impatient?

There will be many of you that may think this is a ridiculous indulgence in semantics but it feels important to me to share what I saw.

The difference is really a degree of timing and pressure, all of which can sometimes change the result. Take the NZ verses Sth Africa in the Cricket World cup semi-final. The NZ batsman Grant Elliott showed great nerve batting for several hours and right at the end needed 5 runs from two remaining balls. Unbelievably he hit a 6 off the first of those two balls to win the game! possibly – “Impatiently Patient”

In or Out

158557024A famous persons house has steel bar gates installed to to keep out “the bad people” and protect them once they are on the inside.
The same type of steel bar gates are installed in prisons to keep in “the bad people” and protect people on the outside.
Who is the prisoner probably has more to do with your level of insecurity than the steel bars?

What If…?

whatifkey“What If” is a key that opens the door of positive opportunity and can let you achieve wonderful new things, yet the same key, keeps people locked in their current existence.

Freedom, success and progress come from using your “What if key” to think about how we make the changes that will give us what we want. IE What if we increase our sales by 3 customers a day and round our prices up to the nearest dollar we would be able to afford an extra weeks holiday??

Paralysis, sense of being stuck and stress come from using the “What if key” to think of ways the same changes will destroy what we have. IE What if the 3 new customers come between 11am and 1pm when we are already full, what if we upset our regulars, or our staff don’t like doing the extra. Most negative “what ifs” never happen, so empower yourself by asking “What is the worse thing that can happen and ” just do it” (no Nike’s required)

Avoiding over & under reaction

indexHaving a vision with a written plan helps you stay on track and avoid over and under-reaction. Recognise the difference between a mistake and a systemic problem. When you have an objective and a plan to achieve it, it is much easier to ignore the many everyday distractions that will fill your day and make you feel like you are working hard/busy.  Someone must focus on the bigger picture objective.
